Alluvial Soils
Alluvial soils found on the acient lakebed of the Creek Shores viticultural area of the Dim Wine Co is made up of deposits of gravel, sand, and even smaller pieces of sediment, such as silt. This sediment was created by the erosion of the Escarpment bench lands when flowing water displaced the benchs soils onto the ancient lake bed that our vines now grow in.
Sedimentary Soil
Soil composition of vineyards is an important viticultural consideration. The soil supports the root structure of the vine and influences the drainage levels and amount of minerals and nutrients that the vine is exposed to. It must sufficiently retain water, but also drain quickly so that the roots do not become saturated. Our terrior was born in the days when the ancient Lake Iroquois lapped at the shores of totdays Escarpment Benchlands. The erorsion from this acient era created the stratified soils that support our root structure today.
